A mole (or melanocytic naevus) is an abnormal collection of pigment cells present within the skin, which is extremely common in every individual. Most people are born with a few moles and may develop more during their lives. A few of these moles, called congenital melanocytic naevi, are usually present at birth. But most develop spontaneously or are caused by exposure to sunlight and tend to appear on those areas of the skin that catch the most sunlight. It is important to monitor nevi for indicators of transformation.
Moles that are suspicious looking should be removed by excision biopsy. Smaller moles can be lasered off for cosmetic reasons.
Moles may be snipped off with a scalpel or surgical scissors. Some moles can be "shaved" off flush with the skin. Other moles may have cells that go underneath the skin, so your dermatologist might make a deeper cut to remove the entire mole and prevent it from growing back. This cut may require stitches.
If you have a mole that looks different from your other moles, your dermatologist may need to do a biopsy of the mole, which means removing the mole and sending it to a lab to check it for cancer.
High frequency radio waves are used to remove skin lesions such as benign moles or skin tags with virtually no risk of scarring – no scalpel blade or sutures are required. Local anaesthetic is injected into the area a few minutes prior to the procedure that takes only a few minutes for each lesion. The wounds heal just as a graze does – usually over a period of 7-10 days. Warts, milia and sebaceous hyperplasia can also be removed with this method.

Both of these notions are not true. Picking at a mole or removing it yourself is discouraged, as this may lead to infection, but it will not make it cancerous. Moles that are benign do not have to be removed, but cancerous moles must be removed immediately, along with the surrounding skin. Talk to a dermatologist for more information about mole removal. Only an experienced and certified professional should remove your moles.
The evidence-based treatments that I use in my office have made me aware of the stark contrast between what people are being sold, and what actually works to alleviate certain skin problems. My goal is to provide safe and effective treatments, and I have been greatly encouraged by my patients’ clinical outcomes.
